Diamond Heart: A Testament to Media Freedom and Innovation

Chu-Hsin Tsai's Award-Winning Office Design Reflects Resilience and Determination

In an era where media freedom is increasingly under threat, Chu-Hsin Tsai's Diamond Heart office design stands as a beacon of resilience and determination. Inspired by the Epoch Times' unyielding stance against the Chinese government's control, Tsai's design is a physical embodiment of the media's mission to provide transparent and unbiased information to the world.

The Diamond Heart design draws its inspiration from the diamond, known as vájra in Sanskrit, the hardest material on earth. This symbolizes the Epoch Times' unwavering determination to present clear messages about China, despite the power of the Chinese government. The Epoch Times is unique in its independence, not being controlled by consortia, bought by the Chinese government, or afraid of their power. The media company's mission to broadcast news of China to the world and spread news of the world throughout China is reflected in the design's unique properties.

Given the rise of internet media content, Tsai's design incorporates complex walls that can serve as backgrounds for video shoots and interview programs. The office design includes a variety of scenes that allow shooting in every corner, transforming corridors, conference rooms, and the lobby into potential studios. For quiet video recording spaces, two small conference rooms with soundproof doors and green screens can be used as studios at any time.

The design's realization technology is inspired by diamond cutting methods, symbolizing the diligence of the managers. The entrance features a company image wall of new stories by the Epoch Times, using diamond cut designs as totems. The wall of the main corridor extends the diamond design to the ceiling, with color charts composed of seven colors and blue glass, simulating the blue light rays of the diamond. This design echoes the universe totem of the large conference room, symbolizing the Epoch Times' diamond-like determination towards the power of the Chinese government.

The right side of the entrance is built with a net of stainless steel, symbolizing the wall of the Chinese communist government that blocks freedom of the press. Behind the net is a map of China arranged with the Epoch Times newspaper, symbolizing the media company's efforts to break through obstacles and restrictions for true information exchange between China and the world.

The Diamond Heart design, spanning 660 square meters, was realized in Taipei from August 2015 to February 2016. It has since produced numerous videos and online content. The design faced several challenges, including ensuring every corner could serve as a backdrop for talk shows, saving space and money for building temporary backgrounds, and downsizing the office area. Despite these challenges, the design successfully reflects the spirit of the company.

The Diamond Heart design was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The design's copyrights belong to C&K International Architectural & Interior Design Co.
